RICHELIEU VALLEY COMMUNITY MAPPING INTERN

Position Code: CULTHER103
Location: Missisquoi Bay and Richelieu River Region, Quebec
Summer 2010

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Richelieu Valley Community Mapping Intern will be an integral part of the QLF's Richelieu Valley Cultural Atlas project, which involves developing an online interactive map that details the unique heritage and natural and cultural resources of the region.  The project will in particular be aimed at interpreting the region’s English-speaking and ‘bi-cultural’ heritage.

The mapping intern will be responsible for content generation for the website, including basic mapping tasks, assessing and cataloguing community resources, and doing so through a participatory approach.  The intern will also be involved in community outreach to promote the project and coordinate volunteer involvement, including the organisation of community mapping and cultural events. The intern will be working cooperatively with the community, under the supervision of the Musée Missisquoi with support from QLF.  These activities are designed to encourage a collective sense of environmental and cultural stewardship, and to complement the efforts of local participants to catalogue the heritage and culture of the Richelieu Valley.

The ultimate goal of the project is to facilitate the establishment of a cultural network across the region, and work towards the preservation and celebration of the region’s unique and layered heritage.

HOURS: Interns may generally work Monday-Friday, from 9-5, but should expect variations on this schedule due to travel and occasional evening or weekend events. Despite this schedule, work will be roughly the equivalent of full-time hours.

QUALIFICATIONS: The candidate should have a strong interest in the arts, cultural heritage and in its role in community development as well as an academic background in cultural studies, anthropology or a related field within the social sciences.  Experience working with mapping technology is an asset. The individual should be able to communicate well in English and in French. We are seeking an outgoing individual with excellent communication skills, experience in community outreach and who has strong research and writing skills.  The individual should be self-motivated, and be able to independently identify tasks and work toward their completion. These skills should be complemented by a strong capacity to work collaboratively and to share and generate creativity as part of a team.

STIPEND AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: This position is contingent on funding. Stipend depends on qualifications, background, and available funds. Applications are due by Monday, March 15, 2010, but are accepted on a rolling basis, so it is in your interest to apply earlier.
